Geodiversity Assessment Through the Évora–Montemor-o-Novo Region: on the Scope of Valorising the Mining Heritage of the Ossa-Morena Zone (SW Iberia, Portugal)

The SW of Iberia registers diverse examples mining remnants from activities that ceased during the twentieth century, namely in Ossa-Morena Zone. Such exposed outcrops are part heritage Alentejo region (Portugal), and found throughout Évora–Montemor-o-Novo at ancient Montemor-o-Novo iron mines. GeSologically, area is comprised within Évora Massif and, besides displaying an important quarrying heritage, also exhibits geomorphological, structural lithological features a key to understand geodynamic evolution Variscan Orogeny Iberia. This work intends evaluate geodiversity propose routes integrate along with selected mines district. Furthermore, characterised by immense cultural, historical archaeological assets that, together this region, have been successfully used for scientific, formal informal educational purposes. Mining can contribute understanding role mineral resources on past, present future society as we know it. proposal herein disclosed, although intending promote geoconservation strategies regarding Zone, does not aim make exploration unfeasible these locations.
